Pioneer Day

Even though we aren't in Utah, we (ok I) decided to talk about pioneers for family home evening yesterday. I think it's important that our children know what our ancestors went through in order to be able to worship as they pleased. I just went over the basics and explained that they had to move all the way from the east, near Connecticut, to Utah to go where they wouldn't be bothered any more. We talked about how they had to pack up all they could in a wagon and walk and walk. We even sang "Pioneer Children sang as they walked and walked and walked" . Apparently Aiden took it pretty hard because a few minutes after we were done she came up to me with tears in her eyes and said "didn't they have money, couldn't they just buy a car? I just feel so sad for those pioneers!" and then burst into tears. She is always a little emotional in the evenings when Lewis gets home (I think she gets so excited to have him home and doesn't quite know how to deal with it), but this was so sweet. I am so glad that she has a compassionate heart and cares about the suffering of others. I just feel sort of sad too to see her upset. I am grateful for those pioneers who risked everything for their beliefs, making my life much easier today.

Brooks is 2 today!!

Happy happy birthday to our little Brooksy Magucksy!! Brooks was born at 5:19pm on July 20, 2005. He screamed for about the first 3 months of his life and still has quite a set of lungs! He is a sweet boy though who loves to cuddle and is very good at finding cuddly little spots. Brooks always says thank you and gives the best hugs, kisses, and "squeezes" around. We are having a pirate birthday today but just with our family. Aiden, ever the party animal, can't understand it, but I think Brooks prefers the low key thing. Since they woke up at 5am with Lewis today, we are going to have a pirate nap after a SPECIAL lunch at McDonald's!! Lucky lucky. We had a treasure hunt this morning and the kids made a pirate ship out of a box, we still have a few around. Now they are watching Dora's Pirate Adventure, mostly to break up the sword fighting and walking the plank that was going on. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful little boy in my life. There is nothing like hearing him say "I you, mommy!"

OMS Residency Isn't for Wimps

Seriously. It's a lot of work. Lewis is gone all of the time and when he is here he is exhausted and has to read read read. He leaves at about 5am and gets home between 6 and 7pm when he isn't on call. He has been working over 90 hour weeks and keeps telling me this isn't even the worst of it. He is on his feet all day pulling teeth and on trauma weeks (half the month), and he is on call (every third or fourth night) he is on his feet all night sewing up faces. A lot of what he sees are drunk drivers or people who weren't wearing their seatbelts. I know you're probably thinking this is going to be another one of my rants (I tend to be a little opinionated), but hang in there.

I think all married OMS residents have used the promise of future wealth to convince their spouses that this is a great idea. I have also learned now that OMS residents like to tell each other how much they know this or that OMS makes a year and how many wisdom teeth they can pull in a day. Money can be a great motivator, and when you are living on a resident's salary (or just waiting and waiting and waiting to be paid) it sounds oh so nice. Many oral surgeons do rake in the cash. Remember the "wisdom teeth only" signs in Provo? I do, and believe me, I want Lewis to make some money some day, BUT the great thing about Lewis is that money is truly not what motivates him. He did not choose this profession because of the money. From what I can tell, Lewis chose to become an oral surgeon and spend 10 years in school AFTER college because: 1. He loves it. See the first picture below. When he came home from his first surgery he didn't stop smiling for at least 72 hours. He loves the broad scope of the work and he loves the challenge.
2. He truly believes that his work helps people. Lewis loves helping people. He knows that he will have the chance to help people look and feel better. It is important to him that he spend his life doing something for the better good, and really making a difference.

So, when I hear other dental wives tell me that their husbands LOVED oral surgery too, but they just couldn't imagine 4 or 6 more years of residency, I listen and I see their point of view. Believe me, I see it. But, I am also so proud of Lewis for sticking to it and for following his dream---even to Alabama of all places. I know that he already is making a difference and that is really the most important thing. My friend whose husband is now a 4th year OMS resident recently wrote me a really nice email comparing the first year of residency to giving birth. It is really hard and painful while you are going through it and you don't know how you could possibly make it, but when it's over you sort of forget how bad it was. Let's hope so, and in the mean time, go Lewis!

More photos of the kids

This is a picture of our "new" patio furniture. We have a deck that is half screened in and covered which is nice in the
evenings when the mosquitoes are in full force. They mean business. When my mom was here she came up with the great idea to use the table in the laundry room (that the previous owners left behind) on our deck. With a little wipe down and a tablecloth (and some duct tape) it works great. I found these great chairs at World Market (I am loving that store right now) on half price, for $8 each I think. I love the color, French Blue.

On our way home from Beaver Dam a couple of weeks ago we stopped at the Alabama ("Alabama the Beautiful") welcome center rest area. There is a huge space rocket there, NASA has a facility in Huntsville. My dad even went to space camp there.

This is just a shot I snapped in San Antonio. I love this kiss!

This last one is the kids in our jetted tub. Although I love it in theory, I have yet to use it. Brooks loves it now, it took him some adjusting, and he follows me around the house in the evenings saying "oo oo ah ah bubbles, mom?" over and over. we have curious george bubble bath! Usually we have to turn the jets off after a short time because the bubbles start to take over.

Ratatouille and the McWane Center

I thought that I posted these pictures already, but I guess I didn't. Here are some pictures from when we went to the McWane Center in Birmingham and a couple of Aiden before her big date to the Ratatouille sneak preview with Lewis. She wanted to have a picture with Brooks too in his lovely ski goggles. I can remember my brother John insisting on wearing these exact goggles everywhere we went--with his karate uniform too. I guess we need to plan a ski trip to PC this winter! (He loves to wear goggles in the pool too even though he won't put his face in the water!) At the McWane Center Brooks and Aiden are loving the Bob the Builder exhibit. Notice the gash Brooks got from falling down the stairs. Nice.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

On Tuesday I took the kids to see the Brimingham Botanical Gardens (http://www.bbgardens.org) which are right next to the zoo. The gardens are huge and beautiful. Here are some photos of us there. I think the kids' favorite part were the puddles. Mine were the hydrangeas for sure.
We were lucky enough to have Lewis home yesterday for the fourth. We spent a lot of the day searching for a bed with not much success. In the afternoon we went to one of the chief resident's house for a barbeque with the rest of the residents. Most of them are married and there are 8 kids too. We all had a really good time. We came home and did a few fireworks which our kids did NOT enjoy and decided to watch the real ones on TV instead of dragging two tired and easily startled kids to watch them outside and get even more eaten alive my mosquitoes. All in all it was a really nice day. The kids were so surprised that Lewis was home last night when they went to bed!!

Clinton and Chaliese's Wedding

We have been in Texas for the last few days for Clinton (Lewis' younger brother) and Chaliese's wedding. I was scheduled to leave Thursday evening with the kids and Lewis was going to join us Saturday morning before the wedding. The kids and I left around 4pm for our flight at 6 which was lucky because as soon as I got to the exit for the airport I realized that I didn't have Brooks' birth certificate. I need to have it because he is almost 2 and they sometimes check. Luckily we live 15 minutes from the airport so I was able to make it in enough time to get checked in. It was quite a scene with me, a stroller, 2 car seats, a suitcase, a backpack, my purse, and the 2 kids. Aiden was trying to help by pushing Brooks in the stroller or dragging her car seat, but she ran out of steam pretty quickly. So finally we got to the check in place and when we got up to the desk the guy tells me that our flight has been cancelled and we are on a 6am flight the next day. I was about to cry at the thought of getting everything back out to the car, but we made it. I couldn't sleep much that night because I was so worried that I would sleep through my 4:00am alarm. Now picture the whole scene again (me the kids and all our stuff getting into the airport). Lovely isn't it? This time, however, our flight took off and we had a great trip to Houston. On Friday I was able to go with Lewis' sister Candace through the temple for the first time. She is leaving for a mission to Rome soon. Friday night was an open house for C and C in Kingwood, Lew's hometown. Saturday morning Lewis got in and we all went to the wedding, it was great. Right after they cam out of the temple, it started pouring! We had a luncheon at Pappacito's and headed off to the recpetion in Austin. The kids and I left with Tiana and Jason at about 10:30, but the reception didn't end until almost midnight, so Lewis, Candace and his parents didn't make it to San Antonio until 2 am! Sunday morning Lewis left and the rest of us hung out at Grandpa Simmons' house. Monday we left at 6:30 pm and so the kids, Candace and I headed off for a quick trip downtown. We saw the needle and the Alamo. We had a long trip home and some man even had to carry Aiden off the plane for me because I couldn't get her to wake up. It was nice to be with family and friends and to be there for some great events.
